Taking proper care of your tools will help them last longer, and work better, so it is best to maintain them as much as you can. Read our tips on how to keep your garden tools and equipment in its best condition.
Clean Your Tools
Ideally you should wash your hand tools after each use. Regular cleaning not only prolongs the life of your tools, but it helps to prevent the spread of pests and disease too. If you haven’t already been keeping on top of your tools, now is the perfect time to start before your store them for winter. Simply wash with warm soapy water and a re-useable rag then dry off with a towel to prevent rusting
Sharpen Blades
Secateurs, shears and lawn mower blades should be regularly sharpened to keep them performing their best. Using blunt tools will make your job much harder, and can even damage your plants if they are not making a clean cut.
Lubricate Hedge Trimmers
Hedge trimmers are valuable tools that can make your life much easier when trimming your hedges, shrubs, or even small trees. Its best to regularly oil the blade surfaces and the throat of the hedge trimmer to keep them in working to the best of their ability. Start by cleaning off any residue from the blades with warm soapy water, and then spray a machine lubricating oil liberally to ensure it covers all the required areas. Wipe off any excess with a clean cloth.
Storing Your Tools
Make sure you store your garden equipment in a dry space such as a shed or garage. Its best to hang them upright, rather than standing or laying them down. And try to make sure they are clean, and completely and dry before putting them away.
